How to Use LessonCoach

A step-by-step guide to getting expert coaching on your lesson plans.

Getting Started

1

Create your account

Sign up with your email, Google, or Microsoft account. It takes 30 seconds.
2

Complete your teaching profile

Click your name in the top-right corner and select Profile. Tell us your state, district, school, role, subjects, and experience level. This helps us personalize your coaching and takes about 30 seconds.

Your first 3 sessions are free

No credit card needed. Start coaching immediately from your dashboard.

Coaching a Lesson Plan

1

Name your lesson

Give your lesson a descriptive name so you can find it later (e.g., “Theme Analysis — The Outsiders Ch. 1-3”). This name appears in your dashboard, history, and on the coaching PDF.
2

Upload or paste your plan

Drag and drop a PDF or DOCX file into the upload area, or paste your lesson plan text directly into the text box. Max 10MB for uploaded files.
3

Select grade band and subject

Choose from K-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12 and your subject area. Subjects include ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Arts, CTE, PE, LOTE, Technology, Spanish LA, and Pre-K.
4

Choose standards (optional but recommended)

Select your framework — Texas TEKS or Common Core (CCSS) — then search for specific standards by code or keyword. You can select multiple standards. For CTE subjects, you'll also choose a specific career pathway (Architecture, Business, Health Science, STEM, etc.).

5

Select focus areas

Pick the coaching dimensions that matter most to you: Differentiation, Engagement, Assessment, Cross-Curricular, Scaffolding, or Inclusion/Accessibility. Select as many as you like.
6

Click "Coach My Lesson"

Your coaching will be ready in about 30-60 seconds. A coaching tip rotates on screen while you wait.

Understanding Your Coaching

Your coaching is organized into collapsible sections: Initial Coaching Review, then Focused Coaching and Deep Dive for follow-up rounds. Click any section header to expand or collapse it.

Each coaching point is color-coded:

Green = Strength

Something you're already doing well. Affirmed and explained so you can do more of it.

Amber = Suggestion

A specific, actionable coaching move you can implement immediately.

Blue = Coaching Question

A reflective question to deepen your thinking about an instructional choice.

Every card follows the What / Why / How / Watch For format — so you know exactly what to change, why it matters, how to do it, and what success looks like.

Guided Coaching Paths

After your initial review, LessonCoach suggests 2-3 follow-up coaching paths based on what it found. Click one to dig deeper into that area.

You can also type your own question in the text field at the bottom — ask about anything related to your lesson plan. For example: “How do I differentiate this for my ELL students?” or “What would a stronger closure look like?”

Each session includes 3 rounds total: the initial review plus 2 follow-ups. After the final round, a session summary highlights key themes across all coaching points.

Rating Your Session

After a coaching session completes, you'll see a quick feedback prompt: “How helpful was this coaching?” Rate your session 1-5 stars and optionally leave a brief comment. This helps us improve the coaching quality over time.

Downloading Your Coaching PDF

Click Download PDF at any point during or after your session to save a branded PDF report of your coaching. The PDF includes:

  • The LessonCoach logo and your lesson details (name, subject, grade, date)
  • All coaching cards organized by turn (Initial Review, Focused Coaching, Deep Dive)
  • Color-coded borders matching the on-screen cards (green, amber, blue)
  • Session summary

The PDF is named using your lesson name (e.g., LessonCoach-Theme-Analysis-The-Outsiders-2026-03-28.pdf). You can also download past session PDFs from your dashboard or history page.

Your Dashboard

Your dashboard is your home base. It shows:

  • Your credit balance and total sessions coached
  • Quick links to resources, templates, and this guide
  • Your 5 most recent coaching sessions

Click any session card to open a detail view with the full summary, metadata, coaching point counts, and a PDF download link.

Session History

Click View all on your dashboard to see your complete session history. Sessions load 10 at a time — click Load more sessions to see older sessions.

Each session shows the lesson name, subject, grade, focus areas, standards, a summary, and a PDF download link.

Deleting a Session

To remove a session from your history, click the session card to open the detail view, then scroll to the bottom and click Delete session. You'll be asked to confirm. Deleted sessions are removed from your view. Your credits are not affected — no refunds for delivered coaching.

Your Teaching Profile

Click your name in the header and select Profile to update your teaching information at any time. Your profile includes:

  • State, district, and school
  • School type and your role
  • Subjects you teach
  • Certification path and years of experience
  • Whether you're an athletic or activity coach

This information helps us personalize coaching and is never shared with third parties.
